Community Benefit Fund
Our Approach to Community Benefit
Pumped storage hydro is crucial for reaching net zero. We believe that local communities should share in the benefits of renewable energy development in the Highlands.
Glen Earrach Energy’s project alone will generate power equivalent to all onshore wind farms currently operating in The Highland Council area – roughly 800 turbines. It’s crucial that we design a community benefit package that is both thoughtful and community driven.
To maximise positive local impacts, we're developing a tailored community benefits approach through robust engagement. It will align with the project's ability to store 30,000 MWh of clean energy, which could reduce grid carbon emissions by 10% and save £2.9 billion in grid running costs.
Applying the Highland Council's social value charter, this project could deliver £3 billion over its initial 120-year lifetime (which can be extended) – equivalent to £25 million a year to the communities within the remit of the council charter.
We're seeking input from a wide range of stakeholders, including local residents, community organisations, councils, and government authorities. By working together, we can ensure our project delivers long-term benefits for the community.

Our Engagement Process

We have already started engaging with the community and are committed to leading an open engagement process to develop best practices for community benefits, ensuring local representation.

-
Seeking Resident Input: We've asked residents at our early engagement and pre-application consultation events for their ideas on how a community benefit package could benefit the local area.
-
Partnering with Experts: We've met with organisations like Foundation Scotland, The Highland Council, and The Scottish Land Commission to discuss best practices and opportunities for a tailored approach to community benefits.
Next Steps

-
Winter 2024/2025: We will continue meeting with stakeholders and host roundtable discussions in the New Year to share ideas and build consensus.
-
Spring 2025: We will launch a local community consultation to gather input on priorities and preferences for the community benefit package.
-
Summer 2025: We will propose a community benefit package plan based on the feedback and insights gathered.
By working together, we can create a lasting positive impact for the community.
